Winter weather advisory in effect today

A Winter weather advisory will be in effect until midnight Saturday.

Snow began to fall in the Chicago area late Friday night and will continue through Saturday, with an expected accumulations of 2 to 4 inches by the time the snow ends. Lake effect snow may add another 1 to 3 inches in northwest Indiana Saturday evening.

Light to moderate snow will result in reduced visibilities with untreated roads becoming snow covered and slippery.

Cook County and counties south are expected to receive between 2 inches and 4 inches, the advisory states, while Lake and McHenry counties are expected to get about 5 inches.

Snow accumulations of about an inch an hour is expected at different times during the snowstorm.

A winter weather advisory for snow means that periods of snowfall will cause travel difficulties. You should be prepared for snow-covered roads and limited visibilities, and always use caution while driving.
