Evanston bomb death ruled a suicide
Following a two-week investigation into the decapitation of a 21-year-old Evanston man by pipe bomb, police have officially concluded the death is a suicide.
Authorities announced Wednesday the man's computer contained a note that explained his intentions to end his own life. The incident, which shook the Evanston community, occurred early in the morning Sept. 14 in a park next to Nichols Middle School.
Forensic evidence indicated that the man ignited the bomb himself and there was not a premature detonation, according to a police statement issued on Evanston District 65's website.
The investigation concluded the man acted alone and had no plans to target others when he ignited the bomb.
Police recovered a pellet gun in the man's backpack at the scene, which they think the man would have used to keep police back if he had been confronted that morning.
The FBI and the Evanston Police Department's analysis of the man's computer revealed that he had visited websites that taught him how to build the explosive. The investigation did not find any evidence that the school was a target.
