Police officer gets probation for bar attack

A Chicago police officer found guilty of attacking a couple at a suburban bar has been sentenced to two years probation and fined $1,325.

Gerald Callahan was convicted of battery Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court for punching a 61-year-old Morton Grove man and a 50-year-old Niles woman on May 17, 2008, while he was off duty. Both victims were injured in the attack.

Callahan was arrested after the attack when he was found passed out in bushes.

According to court records, Judge Garritt Howard ordered Callahan to take anger management classes, undergo alcohol counseling and attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.

The 43-year-old Callahan, who has been suspended for insubordination, was relieved of his police powers following the attack. A department spokeswoman says Callahan hasn't been fired, but isn't being paid.
