Senior property tax deferral:Lake County residents who are at least 65 as of June 1, have lived in Illinois at least the last three years and have a household income of $50,000 or less can apply for a deferment of property taxes on their primary residence. The program is a state loan with 6 percent simple interest that must be paid upon death or sale of the home. The balance of any loan or line of credit where this deferred property is being used as collateral cannot exceed 80 percent of the Fair Market Value shown on the annual tax bill. Applicants must apply each year through the Lake County Treasurer's office before March 1. Lake County Forest Preserve naturalists will guide a candlelit hike on foot, snowshoes or cross-country skis through the woods at the Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods or participants can go on their own. Hot chocolate and treats will be available afterward in the Albright Cabin. The "Romantic Night Hike" is offered from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14. Attendees will meet in the Brushwood parking lot before the hike. Registration is required.
