Dundee-Crown student sent to prison for Carpentersville shooting
A former Dundee-Crown High School student has been sentenced to six years in prison for his involvement in a gang-related shooting last year in Carpentersville, authorities said Thursday.
Bryant E. Granados, 17, pleaded guilty Jan. 29 to armed robbery in exchange for the sentence approved by Judge Thomas Mueller, court records show. A more serious charge of attempted first-degree murder was dismissed.
Granados, of Carpentersville, and a 16-year-old Rolling Meadows boy had been accused of opening fire on a rival gang member's van about 10:50 a.m. April 14 from a vehicle at Route 68 and Golfview Lane. Three bullets struck the van but no one was hurt, authorities said.
The Kane County state's attorney's office said Granados pleaded guilty to the lesser offense after it became clear he "did not fire the weapon and did not hold the weapon." Officials refused to explain why the amended charge was robbery when there had been no prior allegation of robbery, or say what exact role Granados played.
"Based on the facts and the defendant's lack of a criminal history, we believed that the sentence ... was appropriate," prosecutor Mark Stajdohar said. "The initial charges would not have allowed this disposition."
Granados' defense attorney did not return a message seeking comment.
The teen, who was charged about a month after his 17th birthday, must serve at least half of the prison sentence under Illinois law. He received credit for time served in the county jail since his arrest in April.
