One injured when Metra train hits car in Des Plaines
Trains on the North Central Service Line were delayed Thursday morning after a train hit a car in Des Plaines at about 7:15 a.m.
Des Plaines police said one person, who remains unidentified, was slightly injured and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge.
Officials said the name would be released later, following the investigation.
Officials said the driver attempted to drive around the crossing gates on Central Road. The train hit the front end of the car, doing minimal damage.
Metra spokesman Tom Miller said Central Road was closed between Wolf and River roads while the car was taken away from the scene.
Miller said the accident caused delays throughout the line. He said Train 104, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 7:47 a.m., was about 35 to 40 minutes behind schedule.
In turn, Train 106 that was scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 8:03 a.m. was operating 15 to 20 minutes behind schedule. Train 108, scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 8:11 a.m., was 10 to 15 minutes behind schedule.
The motorist was cited for disobeying a railroad crossing signal and for driving without insurance.
