Walgreens sees sales dip
Walgreen Co. reported a 1.1 percent drop in same-store sales for January. The Deerfield-based company blamed fewer incidences of flu and calendar impacts for the unfavorable results.
Walgreen said January same-store pharmacy sales fell 1.2 percent. The company added that there was one less Thursday and one more Sunday compared to last year.
Pharmacy sales accounted for 66.2 percent of total sales for the month. Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 2.7 percent in January, including 1.7 percentage points due to H1N1 flu shots and 1.4 percentage points due to more patients filling 90-day prescriptions.
Walgreens sales in the front end of stores open a least a year declined 1 percent.
Walgreens opened 18 stores during January, including four relocations and closed one.
