Cubs recall outfielder Sam Fuld from Iowa
CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs today recalled outfielder Sam Fuld from Triple-A Iowa. Fuld will wear uniform No. 5 and be available for this afternoon's game against San Diego at Wrigley Field.
Fuld, 28, joins the Cubs for the first time this year as a career .282 hitter (29-for-103) in 79 big league games during the 2007 (14 games) and 2009 (65 games) seasons. He had three stints with the Cubs in 2009, batting .299 (29-for-97) with six doubles, one triple, one home run, two RBI and a .409 on-base percentage. In his career, Fuld has seen big league action at all three outfield positions, including 30 games in left field, 27 games in center field and eight games in right field.
The left-handed batter and thrower is hitting .266 (85-for-320) with 58 runs scored, 13 doubles, eight triples and four home runs in 97 games in Triple-A this season. His .367 on-base percentage is 101 points higher than his batting average and he has drawn 51 walks compared to only 31 strikeouts this year. Fuld is batting .292 (31-for-106) with a .406 on-base percentage in 30 games since the Triple-A All-Star Break.
Fuld was originally selected by the Cubs in the 10th round of the 2004 Draft out of Stanford University and made his major league debut September 5, 2007. Later in 2007 he was named the Most Valuable Player of the Arizona Fall League, batting .402 (43-for-107) in 29 games for the Mesa Solar Sox.
