Elgin murder suspect charged but still missing

Authorities filed a first-degree murder charge Wednesday against an Elgin man suspected of shooting a man who was involved with his live-in girlfriend.

The suspect, Amilkar Antonio "Tony" Caro, 32, of the 1300 block of Dakota Street, remained at large and is considered armed and dangerous, police said.

Caro is accused of gunning down 29-year-old Hugo A. Navarro about 2 a.m. Feb. 4 in front of a house in the 700 block of West Adams Street on Elgin's west side.

Police said the shooting followed an argument between the victim and Caro's live-in girlfriend, Alexis I. Cruz, 18, who has been charged with obstructing justice.

Deputy Chief Jeff Swoboda said authorities continued to search Wednesday but had no new leads as to Caro's possible whereabouts. Cruz, who is accused of giving investigators "multiple stories" about the shooting, was no longer listed in the custody of the Kane County jail.

Police said Caro, Cruz and the victim were "involved with each other, relationship-wise," and a domestic situation precipitated the shooting.

Anyone with information about the case or Caro's whereabouts is asked to call (847) 289-2700, or (847) 695-4195 to remain anonymous.
