Prospect dumps Buffalo Grove

Neither team could take complete control in Friday's Mid-Suburban East Division battle between Prospect and host Buffalo Grove.

After multiple lead changes and turnovers, the Knights earned a 53-48 overtime victory over the Bison.

The Knights' charge was led by junior center Sarah Hunt.

"I wasn't happy with free throws, but truthfully we had good defense down the stretch," said Knights coach Martha Kelly, whose team (17-8, 6-4) finished tied for tird in the East. "Give them credit with their screens and hitting their shots. Our seniors showed some leadership today."

The Knights and Bison were tied 34-34 after three quarters.

The Bison (8-20, 3-7) were in the midst of an almost eight- minute scoring drought before they put up a big 3-point field goal by sharp shooting junior guard Andrea DiPrima.

The Knights, who also had a four -minute scoring drought of their own in the fourth, started turning over the ball more often. This happened because of the trapping and pressure provided by the Bison D.

The defensive stands from Bison senior forward Stacy Lialios and junior guard KC Dunne brought points on the opposite end from Lialos and DiPrima. The Bison saw themselves breathing easier climbing to a 44-38 lead with 1:01 remaining in the game.

The Knights, after spending a timeout, received a clutch 3-pointer from junior guard Ashley Wabik. The Knights applied pressure on the next Bison possession, heisting the ball and scoring another quick layup by senior guard Karly Grouwinkel.

After another turnover by the Bison (22 on the game), Hunt drove for a lay-up, sending the game into overtime.

"I knew I didn't want to go into a double overtime," said Hunt, "I didn't do so well in the first half. Coach worked on improving our overall skills because we haven't been able to score as well, lately."

Hunt took control in overtime, sinking 3-of-4 from the free throw line.

On the one miss, she followed ball off the rim for a rebound and layup.

It gave the Knights a comfortable lead and rushed the Bison offense. The Bison started taking ill-advised shots and ran out of time.

"We didn't handle the ball well, and Prospect capitalized on our mistakes on the other end," said Bison head coach Pat Dudle. "When we didn't turnover the ball we executed well. When we see them again we need to take care of the ball better and play the same defense."
