Hynes urges Quinn to rescind DOC memo

Democrat Dan Hynes says Gov. Pat Quinn should take action after his corrections director sent a memo to employees warning them not to talk to reporters.

Hynes on Tuesday called on Quinn to rescind the memo that he calls a "gag order."

The Jan. 13 letter was sent after weeks of criticism over a secret release program that let some violent offenders out of prison early to save money.

Quinn denied the letter was a gag order. He says it's part of department rules to keep parole officers safe.

State Sen. Bill Brady, a Republican candidate for governor, released a copy of the memo Tuesday.

The memo tells employees who to contact if they get media requests or requests for public records. It warns of disciplinary action if the rules aren't followed.
