Palatine fire district offers classes
The Palatine Rural Fire Protection District is trying something new.
Beginning next week, the department will sponsor monthly community classes for district residents. And the best part? They're free.
The series will kick off at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27, with a representative from Nicor Gas discussing gas safety at home and ways to lower your gas bill.
Firefighter Amy Jo Walter conceived the idea and has been organizing the classes.
"We thought it would be a good opportunity to give back to the community," Walter said. "It's something we're trying out."
Future sessions will be led by the Inverness Police Department, Union Pacific, Palatine Township, Home Depot and various hospitals. Topics will include elderly fraud and scams; train and track safety; drug and alcohol abuse prevention; and preparing your home for winter.
On Thursday, Feb. 25, someone from Northwest Community Hospital will discuss heart health and cardiac awareness.
The classes last about one hour and take place at Inverness Village Hall, 1400 Baldwin Road. Anyone interested in attending should contact the fire department at (847) 991-8700 to reserve a spot. Information is also available at prfpd.org.
