LWV has 3 chances to meet candidates
As the Daily Herald editorial pointed out on Dec. 29th, the newspaper is a valuable resource for exploring ideas and views of fellow citizens. Though we may not always agree with the opinions expressed, we are grateful for a forum that brings people together to freely state their views and attitudes toward current problems and historical perspectives.
In the same way, the League of Women Voters has throughout the years sponsored candidate forums where citizens running for office give their reasons for running and their goals and plans for improving our democratic form of government.
At these forums, voters see the candidates and meet with them personally, but they may also have the opportunity to ask the candidates questions.
Answers can be given in body language and in tone of voice, as well as in the actual words spoken. There is no substitute for seeing candidates face-to-face.
Local Leagues are holding several January forums to prepare voters for the Feb. 2 primary.
The first of these was held in Arlington Heights on Jan. 9.
The second forum is on Saturday, Jan. 16 at the Palatine Village Hall, 200 E. Wood St. The forum begins at 9 a.m. and covers the 54th Legislative District and the 8th Congressional District. All candidates are Republican as there are no opponents for the Democrats or Green Party.
The third candidate forum is on Jan. 27 at the Barrington Library, 505 N. Northwest Hwy. The forum starts at 7:30 and also covers the Republicans running for the 8th Congressional District.
The forums are free and open to the public.
The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, political organization of citizens who volunteer time and energy to promote the political process. In a League forum, candidates can be heard in an environment that invites civility and an exploration of issues and ideas that affect the communities they seek to represent.
We encourage all voters to attend the forums mentioned above and to learn more about the candidates who would represent them in the state and national arenas.
