ISU inspecting buildings after fatal collapse
NORMAL -- Illinois State University is inspecting 16 buildings for problems after part of a column on one campus structure collapsed and killed a man on Christmas.
Illinois State spokesman Jay Groves says the school will inspect the exteriors, roofs, tuck-pointing and other aspects of buildings with facades. Those buildings include the Old Students Union and Milner Library.
Part of a 43-year-old sandstone column on the front of Hovey Hall fell Dec. 25 while workers were pulling it down. Fifty-seven-year-old Stephen White died when a piece of the column fell onto his excavator.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration doesn't expect to release the findings of its investigation into White's death until June.
