The data show global warming is real
Regarding Fen Lind's letter in the Jan. 6 edition of the Daily Herald, he needn't worry, global warming is coming. The Global Warming Petition Project's 31,000-plus signatures that he refers to should not be given much weight. By the Petition Project's standards, there are more than 5,500,000 scientists in the U.S. alone; I'm one of them; refer to NSF statistics, SET data. As of 10 a.m. Jan 6 when I visited the petition project's site, only 39 of the referenced signatures were from climatologists. I checked several of the other signers randomly on Google Scholar, and was unable to find any academic publications which would lend credibility to their opinion on climate matters. In fact, there is not a single credible, as in unbiased, national or international scientific body that dissents from the overall conclusions of IPCC 2007.
While there is certainly a need to discuss and decide what the most appropriate responses to global warming may be, there is no reasonable doubt about the fact that it is occurring; that it is already affecting our environment negatively; and, that the largest portion of the warming is due to human activities.
