Timing is everything as Fremd gets by Dundee-Crown

Defense, rebounding and a timely scoring spurt helped Fremd's boys basketball team secure a 48-40 nonconference win over Dundee-Crown in Palatine on Saturday night.

The Vikings (6-2) held the Chargers to 13-of-42 shooting from the field and out-rebounded D-C 29-21.

The Chargers (3-4), who have dropped four in a row, played stingy defense as well, limiting the Vikings to 10-for-32 shooting for the first three quarters. But Fremd finished at 40 percent after converting all 5 shot attempts in the fourth quarter.

A 7-0 run by the Vikings turned a 35-27 lead into a 42-27 advantage with 2:11 left.

Riley Glassman (11 points) received back-to-back assists from Mitch Dinterman, then Matt Wisniewski, to score the first two baskets on the run. Glassman gave thanks with an assist to Wisniewski for a basket, and Sean Benka (7 points) finished the run with a free throw.

"I had the mismatch on those two plays," said Glassman. "We just took advantage that I had the smaller man on me. But that's what's good about this team. We're very unselfish. Anyone can have a big game.

"Tonight we prided ourselves on our defense. We knew that they can score in bunches. Coach (Bob Widlowski) told us that they scored 31 points in a quarter. It's our work ethic that's making us better."

"We got a couple of easy baskets because the kids were grinding it out," Widlowski said. "When we got up by the 15 points it made it a little easier for us the rest of the way. I thought we closed out the game very well. It's something we've been working on."

Fremd converted 6 of 8 free throws in the last 44 seconds.

Garrett Peters tied Glassman for scoring honors with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Adam Gorecki had 7 points.

"I thought Fremd did a great job on defense," said Chargers coach Lance Huber. "They were bigger and stronger than us. We competed hard, but it's hard to do that for 32 minutes against that kind of size. We have to rebound better to win games. We also gave them alot of 2-shot fouls in the first half."

Fremd converted 8 of 12 foul shots in that span.

Dundee-Crown hung tough, trailing 19-15 at halftime and 31-24 after three quarters. The Chargers shot just 3 of 13 from the field in the third quarter.

Dylan Kissack led Dundee-Crown with 10 points and 5 rebounds.
