Chicago police issue more curfew violations

CHICAGO — New statistics show Chicago police are issuing more curfew violations after a new law went into effect.

The Chicago Tribune reports new data from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s office, which show police issued more than 4,700 curfew violations between Sept. 18 and Dec. 5 of this year. That’s about 600 more than the more than 4,100 issued during the same period in 2010.

The law took effect Sept. 18, setting the curfew for children younger than 12 at 8:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The curfew was unchanged for children between 12 and 16, at 10 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday and 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says ordering children inside earlier will keep them out of trouble.
