Alcohol-related fatalities drop

The number of alcohol-impaired motor vehicle fatalities showed a continual reduction from 2006 through 2010, according to crash data released by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

During that time period, the number of deaths blamed on impaired driving dropped 33 percent, from 446 to 298.

Officials credited the efforts of police as well as motorists who comply with traffic laws. However, the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over/Click It or Ticket” holiday campaign, which involves roadside safety checks and seat belt enforcement zones, will continue through New Year’s weekend.
