House fire kills N. Ind. woman, injures 2 children
LAKE STATION, Ind. — Northwestern Indiana police say two children were airlifted to a Chicago hospital after firefighters rescued them from a weekend house fire where a woman died.
The woman’s body was found late Saturday night in the Lake County town of Lake Station and remained unidentified Sunday.
Firefighters rescued a 3-year-old child from a bedroom floor and a 1-year-old from a crib. Both children were later airlifted to Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago.
As firefighters were extinguishing the blaze, they found a woman’s remains in a living room only feet from the front door.
The Times of Munster reports that a witness told police a 29-year-old woman and her two sons live at the home and said the mother had a birthday party for her boys Saturday night.
