I-70 closed overnight in W. Ind. from tanker crash

PUTNAMVILLE, Ind. — All lanes of Interstate 70 were closed in western Indiana for about 13 hours after a tanker truck struck a bridge support and overturned, killing the driver from Ohio and causing a chemical spill.

State police say the westbound lanes of I-70 near the Putnam-Clay county line reopened about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday and the eastbound lanes opened an hour later.

All traffic was stopped after the tanker crashed about 4:30 p.m. Monday about 20 miles east of Terre Haute.

State police say the tanker broke nearly in half and released about 6,000 gallons of a highly flammable industrial solvent that hazardous materials crews were continuing to clean up Tuesday.

Police say 65-year-old trucker George Leggett of Columbus, Ohio, died at the scene.
