Gurnee sergeant graduates from prestigious program

The Gurnee Police Department announces the graduation of Sgt. Brian Smith from a prestigious program at Northwestern University.

Smith graduated from the School of Police Staff and Command at Northwestern’s Center for Public Safety on Dec. 9. He completed a 10-week program that began Sept. 26.

Northwestern’s School of Police Staff and Command provides upper-level college instruction in 22 core or mandatory blocks of instruction and nine optional blocks during each session.

Major topics of study include management, management theory, organizational behavior, human resources for law enforcement, budgeting, staffing allocation and personnel deployment.

Nearly all of the current command staff at the Gurnee Police Department are alumni of the Northwestern program. Many graduates go on to achieve a variety of leadership positions within their respective agencies

More than 750 grads are police chiefs, and 39 of the 50 directors of state police agencies nationwide went through the program.
