Some Kane County candidates already booted from races

Recent rulings by a Kane County electoral board thinned out some of the competition in upcoming county races. But other attempts to remove candidates from the ballot stemming from problems with their nominating petitions were unsuccessful.

County board member Jim Mitchell is not seeking re-election, but challenged the petitions of Darren Delgado, a Republican who was looking to unseat incumbent Tom Van Cleave in District 10. Mitchell successfully removed Delgado from the ballot. Van Cleave now only has one opponent, fellow Republican Susan Starrett. The winner of the seat will be decided during the primary as there are no other challengers in the race.

District 7 incumbent Monica Silva now has an even easier path to retaining her seat on the county board. An objection filed against the petitions of fellow Democrat Charles Phillips booted him from the primary ballot. That leaves Silva with no other challengers barring a write-in or a late entry after the primary.

Incumbent county board member Bonnie Kunkel wasn’t as fortunate. An attempt to end her primary battle with fellow Democrat Alexis D. Cervantes was unsuccessful. The winner of that race will face Republican Beth Goncher in the general election.

In District 6, an attempt by former county board member Paul Greviskes to remove incumbent Ron Ford from the ballot was overruled. Greviskes had hoped to clear the path for his wife, Angie Greviskes, to take over the seat. Ford and Angie Greviskes will square off in a Democratic primary to determine the eventual winner of the seat.

An initial challenge to Jose Sifuentes’ bid to unseat incumbent county board member Cristina Castro in District 20 was withdrawn. That leaves Castro with one of the toughest paths to re-election of any incumbent on the board. She’ll face both Sifuentes and Penny Wegman in the Democratic primary. The winner of that three-way race will contend with Republican Henoch Fuentes in the general election.

The primary election is March 20. The general election is in November.
