Chicago's ban on 'synthetic marijuana' to begin

Chicago's new law banning the sale of “synthetic marijuana” is about to go into effect.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan says the ban is an important step to increase awareness of the dangers of such substances. Madigan plans to join Chicago Alderman Edward Burke at a news conference Tuesday to spread the word about the new law.

Burke says, starting Wednesday, any business that currently sells synthetic marijuana products must remove those products from its shelves.

Violators will face fines from $500 to $1,000 and could have their business licenses revoked.

Synthetic marijuana is frequently marketed as incense or potpourri. It contains a synthetic chemical that is similar to the active ingredient found in marijuana.
