C. Ind. charged with killing 67-year-old mother

KOKOMO, Ind. — A central Indiana man says he beat his 67-year-old mother to death because he was “sick of her.”

Kokomo police arrested 50-year-old Ronald Calvert on murder charges after finding Joyce Philapy dead Wednesday on the floor of Calvert’s home.

Calvert tells the Kokomo Tribune in a jail interview that kicked and beat his mother to death, saying he “just got sick of her.” But when he was asked for details about the attack, Calvert became argumentative and shouted obscenities at a reporter and jail guards.

Records show Calvert has been jailed 13 times since 1991 on charges including arson, auto theft, public intoxication and resisting arrest. Calvert also pleaded guilty to trying to escape from prison while serving a 12-year sentence for a 1993 arson sentence.
