Illinois man escapes from submerged car
LECLAIRE, Iowa — An Illinois man was taken to a hospital after his car ran off a road in eastern Iowa and crashed into a quarry where it became submerged in water.
The Scott County sheriff’s office says the accident happened early Wednesday morning on Great River Road near LeClaire, when a car driven by 31-year-old Justin Gill went off the road. The car traveled more than 200 feet before hitting a telephone pole and spinning around, sliding backward into the water.
Authorities say it sank about 30 feet from shore.
Gill, of Hillsdale, Ill., was able to get out of the car and swim to shore. He was taken to a hospital but his injuries were not considered serious.
The investigation is continuing.
