Fire leaves four apartments uninhabitable

An apparent stove fire at an apartment building in Elgin forced between 24 and 28 people to evacuate Friday night, authorities said.

The Elgin Fire Department was called to the 300 block of Kathleen Drive around 9:30 p.m. Upon arrival, emergency crews found that the fire had spread into the apartment’s cabinets and three other apartments, according to Battalion Chief Bryan McMahan.

The fire was brought under control in about 10 minutes, he said.

The four apartments were “red-tagged” and uninhabitable, but the rest of the three-story building was safe for occupancy, he said.

Officials from the American Red Cross were assisting those displaced by the fire.

No injuries were reported.

Authorities continued investigating Friday night.
