City reminds residents of electronics recycling options

The City of Naperville reminds residents that starting Jan. 1, 2012, it is illegal to dispose of electronics in landfills. At that time, the city's waste hauler, Allied Waste, will not pick up any electronics left curbside with the exception of items classified as white goods, such as refrigerators and ovens. The city currently offers two recycling programs to assist residents with properly recycling their electronic items.

The first is the electronics recycling pilot program taking place at the Public Works Service Center Recycling Drop-Off Center, 180 Fort Hill Drive. This program is hosted in conjunction with Creative Recycling Systems, Inc., and lets residents drop-off unwanted electronics on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the drop-off center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Accepted items at this self-service location include personal computers, laptops, all-in-ones, monitors, televisions, large peripherals, copiers, computer cables, keyboards, mice, fax machines, VCR and DVD players, CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes and video game consoles. Residents are asked to clean computer hard drives prior to bringing items to this program; the City assumes no responsibility to protect any electronic data remaining in electronics deposited through the program.

The second is the Will County Front Door Electronics Recycling Program, which is open to all Naperville residents in both Will and DuPage counties. Will County has contracted with Vintage Tech to provide free collection appointments to residents with homes that have front doors at ground level. Accepted items include computers, laptops, CRT and LCD monitors, printers, televisions, wires/cables, computer parts, battery backups, computer mice, keyboards, MP3 players, PDAs, scanners, microwaves, cell phones, CD/VCR/DVD players, stereo equipment, fax machines and video game consoles. To arrange for a pickup, call (866) 631-1707 or visit www.vintagetechrecyclers.com/willcounty.aspx.

Please note no electronics will be accepted at the City's Household Hazardous Waste Center. For full program information, visit www.naperville.il.us/electronicsrecycle.aspx.
