Oops — Tollway blames software glitch for mistaken charges
Got a mysterious charge or credit on your I-PASS account?
Our bad, Illinois tollway officials said Friday.
The agency worked throughout the day to correct erroneous credits or debits on some automatic I-PASS accounts occurring as a result of a software problem on the computer system.
Certain bank or credit accounts may have been charged or refunded several times, spokeswoman Wendy Abrams said. These transactions typically occur in increments of $40.
“I-PASS customers may notice unnecessary charges and refunds from the tollway on their credit and debit cards,” administrators said.
While numbers aren’t definite yet, it appears about 4,500 I-PASS holders were affected.
The messup started after midnight Thursday and lasted until 8 a.m. Friday. It was an “isolated problem,” Abrams said.
The agency said it is also working with banks to prevent any overdraft fees occurring.
As of Friday afternoon, officials did not have an explanation as to why the computer glitch occurred.
