Bail set for woman accused of stabbing infant

Bail was set at $2 million Saturday morning for a Harvard woman accused of stabbing a baby in the head.

Claudia Mejia, 36, will need to post $200,000 bond before she can leave McHenry County jail in Woodstock, where she's being held while her case moves through the courts, jail officials said Saturday.

Mejia, of the 500 block of West McKinley Street, was charged Friday with attempted murder and aggravated battery of a child, both Class X felonies.

Details are not available as to her relationship with the baby boy, as police were not commenting beyond a news release.

At 9:59 a.m. Friday, Harvard police and personnel from Harvard Fire and Rescue responded to Mejia's home on reports of the 9-month-old boy bleeding from the face. Upon arrival, paramedics treated the baby and transported him to Mercy Harvard Hospital for further care. The infant was later airlifted to Rockford Memorial Hospital.

A police investigation found that the infant had been stabbed in the head and Mejia was arrested. Harvard police and the McHenry County Major Investigative Assistance Team continue to investigate the case.

Mejia, meanwhile, is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 19 at the McHenry County courthouse. If found guilty of one of the Class X felonies, she could spend between six and 30 years in prison.
