Round Lake Beach man could get prison for stolen guns

A Round Lake Beach man faces up to seven years in prison after admitting Friday he had two stolen handguns.

Javier Tellez, 19, pleaded guilty to aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen firearm during a hearing before Lake County Circuit Judge Daniel Shanes.

Tellez was arrested July 11 after holding police at bay from about three hours in his residence in the 900 block of Cedar Lake Road.

Police had been called for a verbal argument between Tellez and a woman at the house around 5:30 a.m., and the responding officers reported hearing a gunshot inside the house as they arrived.

Assistant State’s Attorney Victor O’Block said the Round Lake Beach officers took cover and summoned a tactical team from the Northern Illinois Police Emergency Alarm System.

The tactical team surrounded the house and received no response to several phone calls they made to the dwelling.

About 8:30 a.m., Tellez threw a 9 mm handgun through a window and jumped through the same window himself a short time later.

Police took him into custody. The woman inside the house with Tellez was not injured during the standoff.

Police later recovered a .38 caliber handgun from Tellez, and both weapons turned out to have been stolen in a June 28 burglary to a house in the 200 block of Park Road in Round Lake Beach.

Tellez, who is held on $250,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 16 for sentencing.
