Scouting report: As she begins her third season directing the Pirates, coach Leslie Schock is optimistic about the season. “With three returning starters (Pappas, Wiedemann and Mayer) as well as the experience of Schweikert, Johlie and Burke, and our newcomers, we should be a worthy opponent in the MSL West,” said Schock, a former Elgin and Northwestern standout. Pappas enjoyed an all-area sophomore campaign, leading the Pirates with 10.4 points and 81 assists. She also grabbed 76 rebounds and led the team with 43 3-point baskets. “Nia is coming off a great sophomore season and has improved her shooting in the off-season,” Schock said. “Katelyn Mayer is going to be a force for us in the paint — she shows tremendous improvement in the preseason from last year.” Schock also likes the team depth. “We will have way more than last year,” she said “ I think Monica Masini, Cassidy McPherson and Morgan Radtke will be able to step in and give us quality varsity minutes right from the start.”
