Man drops possible explosive after suicide

WAUKESHA, Wis.— Residents evacuated from a Waukesha (WAH'-keh-shaw) neighborhood returned to their homes early Wednesday after a bomb squad detonated a device dropped by a man who fatally shot himself.

A female friend of the man called police shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday and said he was suicidal and had a gun. Police say she also told them the man may have an explosive device.

Police responded and saw the man get out of a car and walk down the road. Officers say they tried to talk to the man, who then shot and killed himself with a handgun. Authorities say that as he fell to the ground, he dropped a package that officers believed could be explosive. Neighbors were evacuated and the bomb squad used a robot to detonate the package. The man has not been identified.
