Elgin resident encourages, sends support for troops
The phrase "Support Our Troops" may be a tired cliché for some.
But for Elgin resident Lee Messinger, it's been a way of life.
Four years ago, Messinger noticed some people were really down on the wars being fought in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Messinger also wanted to help his friend's son, who was on his second tour of duty in Iraq.
So in December 2006, Messinger mailed out his first load of boxes filled with powdered drink mixes, baby wipes, playing cards and other items to soldiers abroad.
In 2007, more and more followed.
"What was significant is the guys were over there doing a job for us," he said. "Whatever you think about the war, that's up to you. (But) don't blame them, help them."
Messinger has worked with adoptaplatoon.org to send care packages to members of all branches of the military.
He usually sends about a dozen boxes each month for a cost of $20 each just for postage. He always includes a note thanking the soldiers and shops for items himself.
Many have written back thanking Messinger for his efforts.
"I wanted to do something to help people. I didn't exactly know what to do. This gave me an outlet to help," he said. "It's an honor to try and help these guys. If they're over there, let's do everything we can to help them."
Back problems have forced Messinger to use a wheelchair. He credits word-of-mouth and support from his co-workers at the Elgin YMCA to help keep the supply stream flowing strong.
Items in the highest demand usually are: foot powder; baby wipes; puzzle books; playing cards; snacks; popcorn; powdered drink mixes; shampoo; soap; and body wash.
Messinger also is expanding the list of items to toothbrushes and toothpaste, courtesy of the Elgin-based Kids First Dentistry.
Ellen Karsten, an insurance specialist at the pediatric dentist, said she met Messinger at an event in Elgin in February. Since then, she's been working with vendors to get toothbrushes and travel packs of toothpaste to give to Messinger.
"I think people do want to help, even if it's something little," said Karsten.
