Elgin names freshman tourney for Turek family

Elgin High School has named its freshman girls basketball tournament, which begins today, in honor of the Turek family.

The Maroons will host 16 teams at this year’s tournament, eight “A” teams and eight “B” teams.

“We wanted to honor the Turek family for all they gave to Elgin High by naming the tournament the Turek Family Girls Basketball Tournament,” said Elgin varsity coach Dr. Nick Bumbales.

Lee Turek is the former Elgin High girls coach who won 359 games in his 21 years as the Maroons’ varsity coach. His 1995-96 team took second in the Class AA girls state tournament. Turek’s daughters, Karisa and Jenna, both played basketball at Elgin High and Turek’s mother Maxine, who passed away just over a year ago, was considered the matriarch of Elgin High girls sports.

Games in the tournament, at Chesbrough Field House, will be played tonight and then again Friday and all day Saturday.
