Fort Wayne warehouse fire cleanup could take weeks
FORT WAYNE, Ind. — Officials say it could take two weeks to clean up from a fire that destroyed an insulation warehouse in Fort Wayne.
Firefighters continued spraying down small hot spots on Tuesday at Momper Insulation, two days after the fire broke out. City homeland security director Bernie Beier says about 30 vehicles were inside the building, which accounted for much of the fire’s heavy black smoke.
Beier tells The Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/sfLiw9 ) that sludge has formed near dams placed in a nearby ditch to contain chemical-contaminated runoff from water used fighting the blaze.
Crews are to start work on filtering the water on Wednesday. Officials say the contaminated runoff caused a fish kill in the ditch that flows into the St. Marys River.
