Elgin race recognized by Powerboat Superleague

Elgin's first powerboat racing event, which took place June 17-19 on the Fox River, has been named best new site by the Powerboat Superleague.

Local race organizer Jim McGrath also earned the title of Sportsman of the Year for his racing prowess and success as a promoter.

“The awards are really nice,” McGrath said. “But the real gratification in these deals is when people show up to see the races and they enjoy it.”

The league celebrated its 25th anniversary this year as Elgin joined its six-race season with Thunder on the Fox. McGrath said he was disappointed in the turnout but already is negotiating possibilities for next year.

“It takes a lot to put these things on,” McGrath said. “We definitely need more sponsors — there's no question about it.”

In a poor economy, it could be tough to find people willing to support the race financially, he said. He contributed a fair amount of his own money to put on the event.

In a news release about the awards from Powerboat Superleague owner Sam Winer, Elgin already is listed as the kickoff race in the preliminary 2012 schedule.

Mayor David Kaptain said the city was pleased with the results of the June event, citing good turnout and a nice venue — behind the Gail Borden Public Library. But as council members consider ways to close a projected budget deficit that could reach $13 million, Kaptain said funding for special events like Thunder on the Fox is going to be very limited.

The city this year supplied police officers and divers during the event and public works crews for cleanup.

“The city may only sponsor five events next year,” Kaptain said. “Last year we were involved in almost 200.”

With much left to plan, Thunder on the Fox participants can at least revel in last year's success.
