Court to hear woman’s bond appeal in murder case

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Court of Appeals will consider whether an Indianapolis woman accused of killing her premature baby by ingesting rat poison while she was pregnant should be released on bond.

The court will hear arguments in the case against Bei Bei Shuai on Dec. 13.

Marion Superior Court Judge Sheila Carlisle ruled in June that Bei Bei Shuai (BAY BAY SHWAY) should not be allowed out of jail on murder and feticide charges because there was a strong presumption of her guilt. Bond is extremely rare in murder cases.

Shuai’s attorney says the Chinese immigrant ate rat poison because she intended to kill herself, not her baby.

Dozens of health care and other groups have filed friend-of-the-court briefs asking the Court of Appeals to allow Shuai’s release.
