Painting of Lincoln to be on display in N. Ind.

GOSHEN, Ind. — A 6-foot-by-6-foot painting that depicts a beardless Abraham Lincoln that was used for a Republican Party rally in Goshen in 1860 will be on display in the Elkhart County Courthouse on Oct. 22.

The painting also features vice-presidential candidate Hannibal Hamlin, and Henry Smith Lane, candidate for governor of Indiana. The Goshen News reports that the painting will be on display from 1:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Goshen College Professor Emeritus Ervin Beck will lead a special program on the painting afterward. Beck calls the painting a national treasure.

The painting was done by Goshen artist J. H. Dille for the rally. Elkhart County Historical Museum Curator of Education Rebecca Oestreich says 20,000 people attended the rally.
