Lombard church launches ‘Live the Love’ campaign

Peace Lutheran Church in Lombard is building on its 40-year history as a service-oriented church with the introduction of its “Live The Love” campaign.

“Live The Love” challenges all church members to put their Christian faith into action. The church has committed, as a congregation, to work together toward the completion of 10,000 hours of community service.

“Simply put, it’s members of Peace reflecting God’s love in service to others,” the Rev. Marty Hufford said.

The campaign dovetails on Peace’s ongoing mission of “Changing Lives with the Love of Jesus,” he said.

Peace began the program last month with 140 members serving at the DuPage Convalescent Home, Habitat for Humanity and four DuPage County Forest Preserve properties — all on one Saturday.

“While it was an awesome weekend, the truly amazing part is that it’s only the beginning,” Executive Director Linda Wallace said. The church also created a website, www.PeaceLivesTheLove.org, which links to dozens of local volunteer opportunities. All members of the congregation, both young and old, will be encouraged to use the online tool to help identify where God is calling them to serve.

#147;We#146;ll serve these hours as groups, families and individuals #8212; wherever and whenever we#146;re needed,#148; Wallace said.

Though based in Lombard, Peace is not limiting itself to the immediate area. Hufford will be joining a churchwide mission trip to Tegucigalpa, Honduras, in January 2012. A group of nearly 50 people will be traveling, as part of World Gospel Outreach, to provide medical, dental and vision care; construction assistance at an orphanage; and spiritual support to the residents.

#147;As much as we work to bring the community into our church, we also need to bring the church out to the community,#148; Hufford said. #147;Sometimes it means a six-minute car ride to the Glen Ellyn Food Pantry, other times it#146;s a six-hour plane ride.#148;

Peace Lutheran Church is open to both seekers and confirmed Christians. Traditional and contemporary services are held each Sunday morning, with a variety of specialized programs during the week.
