Stop mining in forest preserves

How many people are aware that our public forest preserves aren’t safe from the mining industry? Illinois has a cozy and shocking arrangement with the gravel mining industry that allows county boards to lease forest preserves and essentially turn them into huge, open pits. The policy destroys forest preserves and removes them from public use for decades.

Sen. Mike Noland will hold a public meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Dundee Township Park District Senior Center to discuss proposed legislation that will stop this outrage and keep forest preserves safe from development, as was the original intention.

I applaud Sen. Noland for his integrity in this day when so many politicians do the bidding of industry to the detriment of the public.
