Venue change sought in Indiana police death case

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — A judge is considering whether to move the trial of a man charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a Terre Haute police officer.

A defense attorney for 24-year-old Charles Elkins told Vigo County Judge David Bolk during a hearing Thursday that he didn’t think Elkins could receive a fair trial in the county because of public outrage over the July shooting death of Officer Brent Long.

Elkins and four others are charged with lying to police by saying that Shaun Seeley wasn’t in the apartment building where officers were searching for him. Authorities say Seeley fatally shot himself after shooting Long.

The Tribune-Star reports that a deputy prosecutor argued that other high-profile criminal trials have been held in Vigo County with local juries despite pretrial publicity.
