Wheeling closing Hintz Road to repair railroad crossing
Portions of Hintz Road in Wheeling will be closed for about a week while a Canadian National Railway crossing is repaired, Wheeling public works officials said.
The work will reduce the bumps drivers feel when they cross the tracks at Hintz near Wheeling Road, said Tim Merrihew, Wheeling's capital projects and design manager.
"We've received a number of complaints about the crossing," he said. "About a year ago we tried some grinding, but that didn't really work."
Workers will remove and replace pads between 10 and 20 feet on either side of the tracks, Merrihew said. The project will cost around $300,000 and will be paid for by grants and the Canadian National Railway.
The tracks, installed less than 10 years ago, are crossed by about 20,000 drives daily.
Work will begin at 8 a.m. on Oct. 14 and should end by 6 p.m. on Oct. 23. Parts of Hintz will be completely shut down during this time. Detours will take drivers to Wolf Road and Milwaukee Avenue to the east, Dundee Road to the north and Wheeling Road to the west.
