Man dies after jumping into Lake Michigan
The Cook County medical examiner says the drowning death of a 31-year-old New Jersey man in Lake Michigan is accidental.
Authorities say Amit Patel of Edison, N.J., jumped into the lake when Chicago police officers wanted to verify his identity. He died at a Chicago hospital after authorities pulled him from the water.
Police say he jumped into the 60-degree water around 8 p.m. Wednesday after officers wanted to verify his identity. An autopsy was performed on Thursday.
Fire officials say he was under water for about 45 minutes before emergency crews found him.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office says he was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
