Redd leads way for new playmakers at No. 21 PSU

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — A new crop of playmakers have emerged in Happy Valley to help No. 21 Penn State.

Sophomore Silas Redd has a Big Ten-leading 869 yards in his first year as the featured tailback in place of school career rushing leader Evan Royster. Redd said Wednesday he suffered “stinger” issues in last week’s 34-24 win over Northwestern, but will play Saturday’s game against Illinois.

The Nittany Lions (7-1, 4-0) lost a key player when linebacker Michael Mauti went down with a left knee injury in Week 4. But junior Gerald Hodges has picked up the big-play slack.

And junior Devon Smith’s speed has helped make up for the absence of standout Derek Moye at receiver due to a left foot injury. Moye is expected to miss the Illinois game.
