Report shows Indiana courts generated $232 million

INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Supreme Court says 1.8 million new cases were filed in the state’s trial courts last year.

That’s one of the statistics included in the annual Indiana Judicial Service Report released Tuesday by the court.

The nearly 1,800-page report says there’s been a 27 percent decrease in filing of murder cases from 2002 to 2010, when 205 murder cases were filed.

The report says more than 1,500 civil and criminal jury trials were conducted around the state last year.

Cities, towns, townships, counties and the state spent about $393 million to operate the courts last year, while the report says courts generated about $232 million in filing fees, court costs, user fees and fines.
