Des Plaines appoints economic development director

Des Plaines acting City Manager Jason Slowinski this week appointed Michael Bartholomew as the city's director of community and economic development.

Bartholomew was one of more than 50 candidates who applied for the position, and one of 15 who were interviewed by two city staff panels, Slowinski said. Bartholomew's first day on the job is Dec. 28. He previously served as assistant city manager for Sterling Heights, Mich., overseeing the community and economic development department there.

Before that he was that city's development director (2006-2007), chief building official (1998-2006) and housing and construction manager (1997-1998).

Bartholomew is certified by the International Code Council in various areas of construction including building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, fire prevention and property maintenance and has achieved the title of Master Code Professional from the International Code Council. He also is certified as a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Accredited Professional.
