CNN’s Toobin to discuss Supreme Court at Elmhurst College

Best-selling author and CNN analyst Jeffrey Toobin presents “The Supreme Court: Inside a Secret World” on Thursday during a visit to Elmhurst College.

Toobin’s lecture begins at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, in Elmhurst College’s Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel, 190 Prospect Ave. Admission is free.

A senior analyst for CNN and staff writer for The New Yorker, Toobin has covered some of the nation’s most prominent legal cases over the past 20 years, including the civil trial of O.J. Simpson and the Kenneth Starr investigation of the Clinton White House. In 2001, he earned an Emmy Award for his coverage of the Elian Gonzales saga.

His most recent book, “The Nine: Inside the Secret World of the Supreme Court,” made The New York Times Best-Seller List and earned multiple awards. Toobin has written profiles of the Supreme Court justices as well as articles on subjects such as the legal implications of the war on terror, and he obtained the first interview with Martha Stewart in connection with the insider trading investigation involving her.

Before joining The New Yorker, Toobin served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Brooklyn. He also served as an associate counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel Lawrence E. Walsh, an experience that provided the basis for his first book, “Opening Arguments: A Young Lawyer’s First Case — United States v. Oliver North.”

Toobin’s talk is part of Elmhurst College’s annual Rudolf G. Schade Lecture series, created by alumni to honor one of the school’s best-loved professors. It also is part of the Democracy Forum, which focuses on issues of access — to education, to information, to economic and political opportunity — and considers their impact on the promise of democracy.
