Meth-making chemical seized at Los Angeles airport

LOS ANGELES — Hundreds of pounds of a chemical that can be used to make methamphetamine and the drug Ecstasy have been seized at Los Angeles International Airport.

Federal customs officials say drums containing 520 pounds of methylamine hydrochloride were seized at a cargo consignment facility three weeks ago.

The shipment arrived from China and was addressed to a company in central Mexico but lacked the paperwork required for highly controlled substances.

Customs officials suspect it was intended for use by drug traffickers.

Authorities say the powdered chemical could have produced more than 330 pounds of meth.

No one has been arrested.
