Indianapolis sculpture’s return delayed again

INDIANAPOLIS — A restored 118-year-old sculpture will wait a few more days to reclaim its place atop the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indianapolis.

The 38-foot-tall bronze sculpture named Victory will remain on street-level display on Monument Circle through Sunday. City officials said Thursday they would wait until Monday to use a crane to hoist the sculpture more than 200 feet to the monument’s top.

The 10-ton sculpture was taken down in April for a $1.5 million restoration project and was brought back to the monument’s base last week. Crews originally planned to hoist the sculpture on Tuesday, but the work was delayed by weather concerns.

Officials say wind gusts need to be less than 20 mph for the crane work to be safely done. Monday’s forecast calls for sunny skies.
