Naperville teen admits making Facebook threat

A Naperville teen was sentenced Friday to six months in jail after he pleaded guilty to sending his ex-girlfriend a Facebook message threatening to kill her.

Christopher Bensfield was warned not to have contact with the woman, continue with his counseling and serve 30 months probation, DuPage Circuit Judge John Kinsella ruled.

Bensfield, 19, was expected to be freed Friday after receiving good-time credit. He has remained behind bars on a $125,000 bond since shortly after sending the Jan. 24 message.

Prosecutors said his ex-girlfriend, also 19, asked him to stop contacting her several times before she received the Facebook threat. Bensfield threatened to kill her if she didn't resume their relationship.

He pleaded guilty Friday to electronic harassment by electronic communications. Bensfield, 28W681 75th St., faced a possible punishment of probation or up to three years in prison. His criminal history includes prior arrests for marijuana possession and criminal damage to property. The teen struggles with bipolar disorder, court records showed.
